I got an email from the good folks at Mothering magazine, where I work as a contributing editor. My article’s been nominated for a Maggie Award.
Actually we’ve been nominated for two Maggies.
One for an editorial, “Case Closed: Breast is Best,” by Peggy O’Mara, and one for my article, “The Vaccine Debate.”
It’s exciting to be nominated for a Maggie Award.
The category for “The Vaccine Debate” is “Best Public Service Series or Article/Trade & Consumer.”
The email that was forwarded specifies that:
“The Western Publishing Association will hold it’s [sic–oops guys, aren’t we in publishing?] 59th Annual Maggie Awards Banquet Friday evening, May 7, in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Gateway Hotel at Los Angeles International Airport, 6101 W. Century Blvd., Los Angeles, California.”
I spent over six months researching, interviewing, and writing that article.
But the best award, really, is that so many readers have written to thank me for it, to ask me follow-up questions, or to say that they appreciate having their unorthodox views articulated in a fair way.
See you at the Maggies, maybe?
I doubt I can swing another trip (my 4-month-old and I will be traveling to Chicago to give a keynote speech at Rock Valley College, NYC to meet with editors, accept an ASJA award, and moderate a panel on travel writing, and to Boulder to research an article about the coolest hospital ever.)
But maybe a trip to L.A. is in my future too?!
ETA: Peggy O’Mara’s editorial won a Maggie Award. I attended the award ceremony. You can read about that here. Mothering magazine is no longer a print publication. You can read about that here.

that’s great news! i think you and baby L should go for it – as long as it doesn’t interfere with book club. 😉
So happy for you! I don’t know what a Maggie is either, but it certainly sounds impressive, and you deserve the accolades.
Congratulations on this very well deserved award!
