What kind of question is this: Is your thyroid out of whack? Most of us mere mortals don’t even know where the thyroid is, let alone whether or not it’s out of whack. Except my friend and colleague Jill McLaughlin.
It turns out that the answer to the question, is your thyroid out of whack, can have lasting health repercussions.
I heard Jill McLaughlin (formerly Jill Grunewald) speak on this issue at a healthy immunity conference last October. When McLaughlin was a young teen, her hair started falling out in clumps. She had to have steroid injections into her scalp. That was the doctor’s fix. But the injections were excruciatingly painful, the alopecia was embarrassing, and let’s just say the intervention did not fix Jill’s problem.
In fact, as she describes in this post, Jill suffered from alopecia on and off for over 30 years.
Essential reading about thyroid disorders
Jill became a holistic health coach in 2006 and was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s (autoimmune hypothyroidism) in early 2008. By drilling down to the root causes, she reversed her Hashimoto’s and thyroid out of whack by late 2008. Five years later, however, she went half bald with alopecia. Which was also autoimmune. Still, she was about to manage that condition and basically cure it, something the medical establishment claims is “impossible.”
She’s also the co-author of an excellent and bestselling cookbook called The Essential Thyroid Cookbook.
I believe that Jill McLaughlin’s is **the** book to read and implement if you’re worried about your thyroid out of whack.
Another book I highly recommend, which I read and re-read (and marked up like crazy) when a family member came down with an autoimmune condition, is Dr. Amy Myer’s The Autoimmune Solution.
Against mandating vaccines
One of the root causes of thyroid out of whack and low thyroid function may be—according to Jill McLaughlin—not having a voice, not speaking your truth, and not being honest with yourself and with others. Because of that, before COVID-19 came down the pipeline, Jill McLaughlin published a long and heartfelt article about why she was against mandating vaccines.
It’s a very long read, people. And worth every second. Grab your favorite beverage of choice and a highlighter pen.
As Jill McLaughlin says in that article:
“I’m a thyroid health educator and the thyroid sits in the 5th/throat chakra, which is all about truth-telling, full self-expression, and standing up for what you believe in. If I were to choose to not publish this, it would fly in the face of everything I’ve stood for. Can anyone say … hypocrite?”
Is the inability to speak what’s on your mind part of what’s making your thyroid out of whack?
Jill McLaughlin believes that many people have a thyroid disorder in part because of their inability to speak what’s on their mind and in their hearts. And nowhere have we seen more fear of retribution or more censorship than with the ongoing COVID-19 craziness. When two weeks became two years … and counting.
It cost her to speak up against vaccine mandates. People who are on the forefront of social change face scorn, ridicule, death threats, and sometimes worse. We’re still pushing the rock up the proverbial mountain. But without brave souls like Jill McLaughlin, we wouldn’t stand a chance.
Symptoms of a thyroid out of whack
This is a long list.
You may have hyPERthyroidism (when your thyroid is on overdrive) if you’re having …
1. Anxiety
2. Copious bowel movements that are more frequent than usual
3. Heart palpitations—a racing or irregular heart rate
4. Skin discoloration
5. Sleep problems (raises hand)
6. Sweating
7. Thinning hair
8. Unexplained changes in your menstrual cycle
9. Weak nails
10. Weird and unexplained weight loss
.
And then again, you may have hyPOthyroidism (when your thyroid has gone to sleep), if you’re having …
1. Brain fog
2. Cold sensitivity
3. Constipation
4. Depression
5. Dry skin or itchy-as-heck skin
6. Exhaustion
7. Muscle weakness
8. Joint pain
9. Weight gain (beyond that COVID 19)
10. Unexplained changes in your menstrual cycle, especially heavy periods
What you shouldn’t do about your out-of-whack thyroid: Have surgery. This is what the doctors want you to do. Just remove it! End of problem. But if I had a dollar for everyone who has had thyroid surgery and regrets it, including Dr. Amy Myers, by the way, I would be a rich woman indeed.
I “…said good-bye to my thyroid,” Myers writes, “a choice I regret to this day. If I had known about functional medicine, I might still have my thyroid today, living symptom-free and healthy with my body intact.”
What you should do about it: Educate yourself. Information is power. You can fix this. But you have to learn how.
A 4-week course to fix your thyroid out of whack
To that end, Jill McLaughlin and her co-coach, Dr. Elizabeth Naylor, are offering a 4-week course to figure out why your thyroid’s out of whack and, more importantly, what to do to fix that motherfucker. Their Fire Your Thyroid program will address hyPOthryoidism, in particular Hashimoto’s.
It’s going to be a-mazing.
Luckily, though I have many other problems a thyroid out of whack isn’t one of them. So I won’t be taking the course. But my readers receive a 10 percent discount. Just use my name, MARGULIS, all in caps, when you register.
