Matthew Henry at Child’sPlayX2 (which has now changed its name to Clever Tykes) is having an auction to raise money for the Border View YMCA, which has been hit really hard by the economic downturn.
There’s a lot of cool stuff over there, including a dinner with MetroDad in NY and a $100 American Express Card.
Best of all, of course, is a new mom and dad gift pack, which includes a signed copy of the Baby Bonding Book for Dads, a CD, a t-shirt, and a Twins 101 book.
I love auctions like these where you can bid on awesome items. A silent or on-line auction that benefits a nonprofit is a win-win for everyone. You get something cool, often for a discounted price, and you also help a good cause!
As I wrote about in this post, research shows that helping others makes you feel happier than just thinking about yourself. When you’re generous and helpful to others, you are also generously helping yourself.
Since this auction is over so you can’t bid on a book (this time anyway), what else CAN you do to help others?
1) Put a bucket in your bathroom. Use it to catch the gray water. That helps your water bills go down, and also helps the planet.
2) Throw a green party where people give donations to charity and previously loved gifts only. Because giving feels good, everyone feels good. And you still get some presents. Gentle-on-the-planet gifts. We did this for my second daughter’s 8th birthday. You can read about it here.
3) Rid your life of plastic. Forever, if you can. The planet will be better off if we reduce our plastic and other waste. And you’ll be healthier and happier without all that plastic disrupting your endocrine system.
