My contributor copies came in the mail yesterday for Best American Science Writing 2009. My article about West Africa’s last herd of wild giraffes, Looking Up, which was on the cover of Smithsonian magazine in November, is included in the volume.
I haven’t read The Best American Science Writing 2009 yet, but it looks intriguing. I’m in good company, with other science writing from 2009 that was published in the Atlantic and the New York Times Magazine and other of the nation’s top magazines.
I was heartened by seeing this beautifully done book—long narrative magazine articles, which are the kind I love to write, and traditional book publishing are far from dead! Plus, I come from a family of scientists and have many relatives who also do science writing. Lynn Margulis, my mother, is a famous and accomplished scientist and it’s nice to do something to make her proud.
In other news, my husband’s picture was on the front page of the Medford Mail Tribune today because we were at my daughters’ school doing stewardship (well, he was. I was playing some weird pretend game with my 5-year-old son). This was part of the school’s Michaelmas celebration. James pulled up heaps of blackberries. The journalist did not manage to spell his name right, but the photographer did.
Do you like science writing? Will you be reading Natalie Angier’s The Best American Science Writing 2009?
